DECISIONS

Cole was of two minds, which wasn’t surprising.

The Dream Cole crouched upon his human body, his own chest. His clawed feet pressing into, but not breaking the skin, of his other form: The Sleeping Cole.

As the Sleeping Cole of flesh lay unconscious near death, the Dream Cole of spirit, stayed perched and pondering.

If Dream Cole dissolved back inside of himself, the Sleeping Cole of flesh  would lose the great, leathery wings again – same as always – and wake up. The Awake Cole would be alive in a wingless, flightless world: Nothing more than a face among the many faces. A life among the many lives.

Who knows when he would enjoy such a dream again? Dreams of flight were rare and so precious. Cole had never known such precious freedom outside of dreams.

Yet if Dream Cole stayed out of himself much longer, the withering cord between his dreaming self and his traveler, real self, would fray and unwind. Once that started, there was no mending it.

He had to return, otherwise: No friends. No family. No Love or Lover. No Laughter. No daylight.

Who was he if he wasn’t his parents’ son? If he wasn’t the big brother, looking after his brothers and sisters – sure they were all adults now, but still, who was he if he wasn’t their Big Brother?

Was flight so precious that he would give that up? How can he give up Tia? Who was he if he wasn’t Tia’s husband?

His children. What would he do or be without his children? How could he never be Daddy again? All that he deeply treasured, everything that created and formed the best of himself that he worked so hard to achieve, would be lost forever. He’d be left as a parasite, forced to nourish himself upon the living.

Yet. Yet!

This aerial creature of flight was also a coveted thing. To exist within dream! Even nightmare! Was… well it was Glorious!

There was no other word for it. Glorious!

His wings!

– Here Cole spread them out, both for his adoring gaze as for the sheer tactile feel of it –

His magnificent wings, as adept as fingers, were nearly their own entity, his closest secret friend.

So it was on this stage alone, his body directly above his heart, where Dream Cole found himself. Everything outside of the stage was Death. But upon the stage was the dividing curtain. On one side of that curtain, Life. On the other, Undead. Dream Cole’s divided spirit was torn between powerful desires and never was his indecision greater.

Suddenly a slight breath of a whisper. Faint hissing carrying the massive gravitas of a collapsing star.

Dream Cole’s head jerked to the side even as he knew; even as his soul froze; even as he looked toward his fragile cord.

With threads whipping and snapping away wild as angry snakes, the strands uncoiled.

CONFESSION

by E.C. McMullen Jr.

Copyright 2013

After the harrowing, brutal car chase across the county, speeding at night through a downpour, it all came to an immediate end when Jesse’s Chrysler slid off the road and slammed into a tree.

Anyone else surviving such a crash would cautiously check themselves for damage, but not Jesse. Jesse knew he was hurt bad, but if Daniel caught him, he’d be dead.

Jesse ran limping into the cold rain and dark woods. His heart was drumming in his chest. His head was pounding from the elevated blood pressure and the last squirts of adrenalin. Jesse was wounded, exhausted, used up, and along came Daniel from behind, casually holding his lantern; as if enjoying a pleasant walk in the stormy night.

It only took a moment of that bright light falling on Jesse’s face for his button-black pupils to shrink to pinholes and the woods to go dark. Doubly frightened, Jesse turned to run, only to painfully slam into a tree.

That’s how Daniel found Jesse, cowering on the ground, bleeding, unarmed and face to face with the husband of his lover.

Considering the night and everything that led up to this moment, Daniel, having the drop on Jesse at gunpoint, looked upon his foe with an expression of odd curiosity.

It was that lantern-lit curious expression, as if Daniel was looking at a strange bug, that infuriated the beaten Jesse. Accepting his defeat, he began confessing,

“Okay! Okay! I did it! But Tina and me are in love, man! Your wife loves me! Me! And why do you even care? When was the last time you loved her? Held her? Do you even remember? Do you?”

Daniel said nothing but thumbed back the hammer on his revolver. Jesse flinched, throwing his hands over his face.

“Fine! Fine!” Jesse shouted in tears. He was a dead man anyway, what did he have to lose? “We fucked! Okay? Is that what you want to hear you maniac?”

Only the clattering, splattering noise of the rain, and silence from Daniel. Jesse despised that smug confidence.

In a flash, Jesse thought of the slimmest opportunity. Make Daniel lose his shit. Make him angry. Make him sloppy. Make Daniel want to drop that gun and punch his enemy in the face. Despite his injuries, Jesse was certain that if he could just get close enough to grab Daniel, he’d make short work of the little cuckhold.

“I fucked her and she loved it!” Jesse shouted. “We did everything! We did it all! She was going to leave you for me! For me, you needle-dicked shit!”

Jesse’s words weren’t having the expected result. Daniel wasn’t reacting: No rage, no jealousy, nothing to make him lose control and possibly give Jesse an edge. Daniel only raised his brows. “I must admit, I’m amazed.”

Jesse lowered his hands, confused. There was just no figuring Daniel out.

“Your confession,” Daniel said. “I’m surprised you didn’t at least try and talk your way out of it; convince me I had the wrong guy.”

Jesse blinked in surprise, as clearly this was an unconsidered option.

“Would that have worked?”

Daniel shrugged,

“I would have given it a shot.”

NOOK OR NOT?

ECFirst, there was this,

Barnes & Noble Bows To Apple And Amazon; Exits Tablet Business

To which I made this observation early today,

This is not the first time B&N threatened to abandon the Nook.

And whether Microsoft buys it or not, someone (likely already making tablets) will buy Nook since the user base, while small compared to Amazon and Apple, is too large to ignore. In an arena where 6% is a joyously significant sales increase, that audience will provide a hefty lift to whoever incorporates Nook technology into their next generation of tablets and smartphones.

On the other hand, if no one wants the Nook and current customers are faced with the dilemma of losing all of their book purchases and starting over? That will create a huge distrust of all future eBook purchases not only for the Nook audience, but for the other eBook buyers who notice and wonder.

No tech lasts forever, ask anyone who replaced their VHS with DVD and DVD with Blu-Ray or streaming. Ask anyone who replaced their tapes and records with CDs and their CDs with MP3s.

My first eBook, PERPETUAL BULLET

My first eBook, PERPETUAL BULLET

Difference between movies, music, and books is, you can’t make the book look any better in your mind. You can’t make a book full of text sound any better. All an eReader does is make carrying them around more convenient (but! The latest eReader holographic-ly projects the words into the air! I can read the book, In The Air!
The Words Are In The Air!!!
THE AIR!!!).

Nope. That story is as good as it’s gonna get!

Now for the UPDATE!
Barnes & Noble to Discontinue Nook Tablet Business, Continue With E-Readers

BINGO!

Barnes and Noble has decided to follow the business model of little start-up Microsoft vs gargantuan IBM (circa 1980). Why limit your tech to a single manufacturer (Beta vs VHS – circa 1984) when you can license it to everyone (Android vs Apple – circa 2007 to current)?

Assume as always that people will separate into two groups: Those who want the name brand and those who want the greater bang for the buck.

I’m all for Amazon (they give authors their own page. WTF, Barnes and Noble? How many damn boats can you miss, already?), but personally, I don’t see Jeff Bezos being able to create a mindless consumer cult around himself the way Steve Jobs did.

Buying the latest Nook from a new manufacturer isn’t a game changer or product killer.

Eventually people who own any tech will buy newer tech. Kindle has gone through several generations now and watched their customers “grade up”.  Consumers do that so long as the new tech runs their old stuff. How many of us replaced our VHS players? CD players? Hell! Some folks may already be on their second Blu-Ray player. And nearly all Blu-Ray players are made to be compatible with DVDs and many with CDs.

Sony and Nintendo (and to a lesser extent, Microsoft) know to make their players somewhat backward compatible and video games have the highest consumer turn-over rate of all recorded media. People rarely hold onto those things.

Caveat: My eBook, PERPETUAL BULLET is available both for the amazon Kindle as well as the B&N Nook.

Perpetual Bullet Goes Wide!

My first published story was in 1995. It was also my first pro sale.

That felt pretty good!

My supernatural tale, RATTLESNAKE TIE, was published in the October 1995 issue of Biker Magazine and they paid 10 cents a word.

Since then I’ve had a number of both fiction and non-fiction published. I began one of the oldest Horror Thriller websites on the Internet. And after all of this time, I’ve learned what makes a good story and what publishers want to sell.

But here we are in 2012 and the publishing landscape has been upended. Those brick and mortar bookstores that were unable to adapt to the change died and, and in truth, have been dying out long before eBooks established their powerful foothold. In just the last decade we’ve seen Tower Bookstores, Crown was dying in the 1990s while Borders and Barnes and Noble were flourishing. Waldenbooks died, and so did Borders. Today only Barnes and Noble, BAM, and Hastings remain.

But on the Internet it’s a whole other story. Amazon has become the WalMart of the Internet, but despite its deep and wide selection, people still think of it as an online bookstore first. In eBook sales in particular, iTunes and Barnes and Noble, as well as BAM (Books-A-Million) are close behind and there may be room for more, not fewer bookstores. For a fact there actually are far more bookstores that are doing quite well. Smashwords, Lulu, Kobo, and fresh start-ups like Diesel.

So what does that mean for someone like me? It means there may be an established audience out there for my previously published work. It means that my stories, which were here one magazine month and gone the next can live again and be enjoyed by a new audience.

My first eBook is PERPETUAL BULLET: A Science Fiction Collection. What’s it about?

Monsters hiding among us and technology collide in a world marching toward dystopia.

So it’s a dystopian future with monsters, heroes, villains, horrors, hazards, danger, compassion, love, and lives worth fighting and dying for!

PERPETUAL BULLET is now available for the Android Tablet, iPad, Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, and pretty much every other “e” including your SmartPhone or iPhone and home computer.

At only $2.99 for 6 tales, I think many of you are going to like it. A lot!
