Christmas In Nebraska

CHRISTMAS IN NEBRASKA
Copyright, 2019 by E.C. McMullen Jr.

Once upon a dark Christmas night, as Santa flew across a cold Nebraska sky, he looked down and recognized a person he’d known ever since that man was a child.

Santa never liked Tony as a kid. No real reason, ‘You can’t like everyone,’ Santa thought.

“Little League Tony,” Santa called him. Hard working Kid with a great pitching arm and a bright future who never got a break.

Any college recruiter would have loved to get the teen Tony on a scholarship, if they’d only knew he existed. But his Mother was a mouse and his father an itinerant drunk, never letting the family stay long enough anywhere to build on anything.

Opportunity avoided adult Tony like the plague. Santa never understood it, but he accepted the nature of the world. His sympathy for such children long ago turned to pity and finally, as they grew into adults, antipathy.

Santa always felt that such “cursed” children didn’t deserve any breaks. Bad Karma is earned and all that. Santa certainly wasn’t about to help someone whose odds were always against them.

Santa’s long life taught cruel lessons and gave him a hard-nosed view of the world that broke his wife’s heart. Regarding Tony down there, who was blind to the fact that he was walking away from civilization instead of toward it, reinforced Santa’s views. To Santa, there was no point in helping such a person.

‘Never step into the path of someone’s misfortune,’ Santa sagely told himself.

So you can imagine the satisfying sense of schadenfreude that Santa, while flying over a wintry Nebraska below, felt upon seeing a grown Tony walking lost and alone in the snow, far from a broken down car and away from help.

‘You’ve been “Little League” your whole life,’ Santa thought.

He felt only contempt for Tony at witnessing yet another in the endless series of the man’s “plights”. So many children lead such interesting, fascinating lives, even if they never know it. But boring old hard luck Tony was the least entertaining kid Santa ever endured.

Head down, Tony shuddered from the piercing cold of a deep Nebraska winter wind.

‘He won’t need any presents where he’s going,’ Santa chuckled to himself.

Tony, his brain methodically shutting off blood to various parts of his body, in order to conserve heat to the vitals, registered Santa’s sleigh flying overhead.

Tony looked up in time to see Santa approach and joyfully wave to Tony with his middle finger.

‘Yeah, fuck you too, prick.’ Tony thought as his foot crunched against a snow covered stone.

Tony stumbled, then fell.

Santa, seeing this, felt merrily amused. He pulled the reins on his corsairs so he could do an aerial victory lap to celebrate Tony’s upcoming demise.

In angry frustration, Tony grabbed the rock that tripped him. He hefted it to get a sense of its weight. Forcing his eyes to sharpen on his prey, Tony tracked Santa’s circle, the old man’s, “Ho! Ho! Ho!” reaching Tony’s muffled ears.

With the only talent he ever had, Tony threw the stone, watching it sail high and arc far in front of Santa, and Santa’s reindeer and sleigh pulling the happy old man face first into the flying rock.

The merry old elf fell out of his sleigh, down through the arid sky, his body hitting ice and snow with a bone breaking thud.

Tony, feeling his fortunes had somewhat changed for the better, approached the stunned and disoriented man. Such bright and wonderfully warm clothes.

A little ways off, the reindeer touched down to wait for their master.

‘Merry Christmas to me.’ Tony thought as he stripped the dying elf. His heart felt as if it would glow with happiness.

Post ten NON-POLITICAL opinions you have that are likely to be very unpopular.

They can be about food, history, science pop-culture, music, anything but politics.

I’ll Start –

ImInvincible

These are the non-Political evidence-based opinions that I’ve been defriended for on Facebook –
1. George A. Romero had fast zombies in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. He had fast and invisible zombies in DIARY OF THE DEAD.

2. NEXUS remains the best superhero comic series ever.

3. AVATAR was not only the worst movie James Cameron ever directed, even SyFy channel has shown better work.

4. If you travel in time while held within the gravitational field of a sufficient cosmic mass / body (one with a gravitational field significantly stronger than your own body), you will remain in that field regardless of how far forward or backward you move in time. In physics, Space Time are two interlocking, but separate cogs, which work within the framework of the four forces of nature, and not the opposite. So unless your time machine is also an anti-grav machine…

5. A Matter Transmitter in THE FLY and STAR TREK sense (extraordinarily precise disassembling and reassembling of the atomic structure of living beings into the same living beings), isn’t as viably efficient a technology as transmitting matter whole from point A to point B via wormhole and String “bundling” (imaginatively launching from where we currently understand the concepts).

6. If you can upend physics by imagining that the dead can spontaneously return to life as seeing, hearing, mobile bipedal cannibals, capable of moving erect, balanced, and lasting for years, you can imagine them being fast .

7. We do not have a Bee die off Crisis, since the accuracy of research/counting of Bee populations / Colonies remains reproducible only when limited to Beekeepers and not the unknown but (in all likelihood) overwhelmingly larger populations of bees in the wild (which are virtually impossible to monitor thanks to their ever-changing nomadic lifestyle – though some scientists are trying).

8. The truth is, we love FIREFLY for what it could have become. We have settled for what it is: which is really good, but not great (I don’t care what you use to terraform your planet or moon, distance from its central star will either make it earthlike inhabitable or an unendurable hell. And the Bai Hu / White Sun system? The physics are faith-based).

9. Science Fiction Horror novels are more natural to each other than Supernatural Horror novels. The first Science Fiction novel was also the first Horror novel and the Horror trope of the Mad Scientist / Doctor has endured ever since.

10. Extending the human lifespan more than 10 times its current limit is not only possible, but environmentally desirable.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO…?

UDMPAwardsIn 2009 I worked as Production Designer and Art Director on the Science Fiction Horror Thriller webseries, UNIVERSAL DEAD. It starred Doug Jones, Gary Graham, and D.B. Sweeney.

It was written and produced by my bro and long-time Feo Amante’s Horror Thriller alumni, Kelly Parks, and released as a webseries in 2010, where it became an Internet hit.

Eventually, Kelly had it re-edited into a short film, and it began sweeping film festivals, finally winning the 2013 winning the LAWebfest, and competed in the Marseilles, France Worldfest (representing the U.S.), later that year.

Now UNIVERSAL DEAD is again nominated in a film festival, and the San Diego Film Awards have nominated me for Best Costume and Makeup.

You know, I’ve been so focused on helping UNIVERSAL DEAD  become a TV series or feature film, I never gave any thought to the idea of my winning an award.

Yet now that I know I’m nominated? I want to win!

If you’re in the San Diego area and plan to attend, IF  I should  win, my award will be accepted by Kelly Parks.

AND THEN…

AImageAND THEN…
Copyright 2014
by E.C. McMullen Jr.

In deep woods far from civilization, all praise, offerings and beseeching was done.

The brief spells and long chants of incantations were over.

Now all that was left for the Coven of Three was the waiting.

Patiently they looked down upon the Enchanted Circle of Spirit Twine on the forest floor. Patiently they waited as arms outstretched, they Squared the Air above The Circle with their living flesh, in accord with the Written Word.

Little itches but none were scratched.

Insects, wafting through the air and mistaking the living for inanimate things, landed on their skin, their faces. The Coven of Three ignored them.

This final three still standing, winnowed after eight years from a far larger coven, waited for the sign, the something, from this, their greatest most informed most prepared for work of Magiks. They would not be found wanting. This was their ultimate It.

Clouds came and went and vanished from sight, while the Coven of Three gazed down upon the Enchanted Circle of Spirit Twine and waited for the mystical antiphon to their song of enchantments.

Muscles ached. This was exhausting and part of that was keeping back the doubt. Stubbornly concentrating against all of the background chatter one’s mind produced.

They all had to go to the bathroom, yet they would not. Thirsty and yet they wouldn’t drink. Pangs of hunger hit them all, but they endured.

The Eastern star that rose to greet their great work, now settled in the West.

The sky was lit by dusk.

WITCH 3: “Aaand… Nothing happened.”
WITCH 2: “Nothing ever happens.”
WITCH 1: “No. Something happened. We just lack the senses to feel it yet.”
WITCH 3: “Then how can you say anything happened?”
WITCH 1: “Because I sens-! Eh, I felt- …ah.”
WITCH 2: “Yeah, right. This is bullshit. It has always been bullshit. And everyone knew it before us!”
WITCH 1 (desperation): “No! I sensed and felt it!”
WITCH 3: “You just said you couldn’t.”
WITCH 1: “I said you couldn’t!”
Witch 2: “You said ‘We couldn’t’.”
WITCH 1: “I was referring to you, not myself!”
WITCH 3: “Then why’d you say ‘We’?”
WITCH 1: “I … I meant the ‘Royal’ We!”
Witch 2: “Which includes you.”
WITCH 1: “No it doesn’t! You don’t know anything!”
WITCH 2 (walking away): “I know I’m done with this crap. Huh, I’m such a fool.”
WITCH 1: “You can’t break the magic circle! You can’t walk away!”
WITCH 3 (walking away): “Me too. I’m done with the stupid and you’re a delusional idiot.”
WITCH 1: “You’re both breaking the circle! That’s bad luck!”
WITCH 2 (distant): “Shut up.”
WITCH 1: “You’ll be visited by storms!”
Witch 3 (gives over the shoulder finger flip)
Witch 1: “BY DEMON STORMS!!!”

Witches 2 and 3 disappear over the hill crest.

In approaching despair, Witch 1 waits, listening for their return. She hears their motors start and putter away.

Witch 1 glares at the Enchanted Circle of Spirit Twine on the ground, laying there like a very long piece of rope she spent many nights weaving and chanting over: It looks very much like the discarded dirty laundry and worthless rags that went into its creation.

From the pit of her stomach, the bottom of her heart, the seed of her soul, she screams in a rage of deepest frustration.

WITCH 1: “AAAAAUGHHH! WHY DIDN’T YOU FUCKING DO ANYTHING?!?”
Spirit Twine: ” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Shut up.

WILLIAM’S MOTHER

Anon01WILLIAM’S MOTHER
by E.C. McMullen Jr.
Copyright 2013

Sylvia woke and there was quiet Little William in his crib, waiting only for her.

“Such a good baby,” she cooed. “You never make a fuss, do you?”

No, Little William never made a fuss. Not a peep. He had no face, only the slightest discoloration beneath the skin where his eyes should be. Yet without nostrils or a mouth, Little William still responded to his Mother’s touch.

Sometimes Sylvia would wake from restless dreams just to check on him.

The moon shone through the baby’s window. A gibbous moon: bright but not too bright, perfect for when the people came.

When they came?

They were already here!

Sylvia heard the herd mulling in the main room, clattering about with their equipment.

“Are you here, Sylvia?”

Oh.

They brought that one.

The oaf who called to her as if she ever needed calling in her own home. As if she ever needed goading to be a courteous hostess.

“Answer if you can hear us!” The oaf called again, as if this was her  house and she was calling for the children or servants.

Sylvia was not about to answer.

“Give us a sign!”

A sign. Sylvia’s presence would be enough.

Well then, Little William was all ready and looked just as perfect as he could be. If only she could have seen that perfection in life, death would not keep them in this house.

Still, she saw the beauty of her Little William now and that’s what is important. Even better, crowds of people came nearly every evening to see her Little William.

Sylvia adoringly rubbed her nose against his featureless face.

Cradling him in her arms, Sylvia regally descended the staircase.

Everyone below turned their attention toward her.

Immediately the cameras began click, click, clicking. An unnecessary sound in a digital age, but a reassuring one. A sound of normalcy for the living gathered in this soul harrowing house.

Sylvia didn’t know that the cameras never captured the bone white orbs of her colorless eyes or the self-inflicted bullet hole in her forehead. Unlike a human brain that interpreted what it saw through human eyes, the cameras could only capture what was actually there, not what the mind said was there. So the cameras caught only the reflected light from a doll. A doll whose painted face faded away some long time ago. A faceless doll that floated alone down the dark staircase without string or trick.

The House of the Haunted Doll brought the world to its door.

Sylvia smiled her biggest smile as the corners of her mouth creased back to her ears. All the while she held her precious Little William’s head against her own. This was really all about him after all, or should be.

Anyone among the living could see that she radiated maternal pride, for Sylvia treasured her Little William as any loving mother would. Yet she regretted the fact that he inherited none of her good looks.

BUG BAND

Andreas Paul WeberBUG BAND
by E.C. McMullen Jr.
Copyright 2013

At the last minute, their drummer, Tzt, needed a lift. He loaned his bike to his brother and bro never returned it.

Tzt lived so far away, but they needed him. They needed their drummer! So away they went, griping all the way.

Of course they didn’t like it. The concert was that evening and in the opposite direction. Worse, they pedaled their bikes twice as fast to make time.

Damn this last minute madness!

Tzt was supposed to have his own transportation, and doubling up on a bike plus the drumset would make it harder on the others. They would have to take it in turns so they weren’t worn out by the time they reached their gig.

Then when the band finally reached his place, Tzt said his drums were in his Mom’s garage and they had to go all the way there first. And his Mom wasn’t back along the way they came, she lived further out in the opposite direction from the gig.

Well that was the last damn straw. The band left Tzt behind. His cries of, “Wait! Guys! Aw c’mon, guys!” faded in the distance as did his history with them.

Screw it! They would just do without a drummer tonight. Now they were in a rush and running late because of that asshole, and they couldn’t afford to blow this gig.
