Candle In The Mirror
CANDLE IN THE MIRROR
by E.C. McMullen Jr.
We put a solitary candle on our window sill and gave it a flame.
It looked solemnly pretty there and its flame warmed the cold winter light through the window.
But true to our nature, we tend to anthropomorphize things.
So we put a mirror beside the candle, so it wouldn’t feel alone, and the reflection would enhance its light.
Too late we realized that the candle knew the other candle was only its own reflection. All we did was force it to watch its own lonely, silent death.
Oh, and our lace drapes caught fire and the house burned down.
Man I tell ya, there are some goddamn days you just can’t do anything right!
